Vandal resistant public lighting solution for the City of Cape Town.
Eagle Lighting (Pty) Ltd, a leading project lighting solutions provider in South Africa, approached Pro Visual Technologies (Pty) Ltd (Pro Visual) to develop a custom, vandal resistant, lighting solution for the City of Cape Town's Integrated Rapid Transport system. By developing the product from component level to final luminaire we held full control over all the thermal management aspects.
The result is a far superior lifespan in the African climate compared to other generic linear lighting products. This product was developed in Africa, for the African climate, built to an international standard.
Working closely together with Eagle Lighting, Nemko Consulting Engineers and the City of Cape Town’s Department of Transport, Pro Visual took the client's requirements and developed custom luminaires with durability and vandal resistance as the two key driving factors. The West coast of Southern Africa has one of the most corrosive environments on earth (rated >C5 according to ISO 9223). This posed a serious challenge to thermal management and ultimately the lifespan of the product. The solution was a fine balance between correct use of materials and LED drive current. Osram OS's PASS team assisted in verifying the projected outcomes. The end product's predicted L80B50 lifespan is 48000 hours at an ambient temperature of 45°C - just over 10 years at a duty cycle of 12h/24h. Further to even light distribution, which was achieved by using the wide emission angle of the Duris S2 LED from Osram OS, vandal resistance was a key requirement for the totem light. This was achieved by using proprietary advanced composite materials and custom made, unique security-keyed screws, ultimately resulting in the durable, vandal resistant and uniform luminaire the customer envisioned.
Pro Visual's team went on to support the client during the installation process by providing product training to Eagle Lighting's team as well as the installation contractors. Finally a verification process was followed which entailed Pro Visual examining installations and verifying correct installation as part of the warrantee activation. This valuable process helped to identify and remedy any product and installation failures early in the commissioning process giving all stakeholders confidence in long term project success. The final rollout was retrofitting all the existing shelters as well as fitting into the new shelters. The City of Cape Town's IRT program is set to continue with rollouts till 2025.
